Irish anime & manga characters
It has recently come to my attention that the information available to the Internet public on Irish anime and manga characters is slightly out of kilter.
The wikipedia entry on this (incidentally, the reason for this article, and a total accidentally found link) lists three characters.
Three.
That’s just silly
Well, here’s some more.
Ok, so wikipedia have listed:
- Lancer - from Fate/stay night : I don’t think this counts as a spoiler as it’s revealed in the first episode and isn’t plot-centric; Lancer is supposed to be the reincarnation of Cúchulainn (click here if your primary school history is a fading memory)
- Bazett Fraga McRemitz - from Fate/hollow ataraxia : A 23 year old female mage born in Ireland.
- Seiuchin : I have never even heard of this guy or the show he was from (Ultimate Muscle), but maybe it was big in America.
Now, I put it to you that there are several more characters in anime, many of whom are no lesser side characters than those listed on wikipedia, that have been overlooked.
For starters,
- Canon Memphis : the angry female pilot from Fafner. Recruited into the New United Nations’ Human Army, she is originally from Dublin, Ireland, which was completely annihilated early in the conflict.
- Unnamed Girl : You don’t need a name to be the protagonist (Fight Club, anyone?), and the unnamed girl from Studio 4C’s short, “Comedy” can claim this. We can probably make a reasonable assertion that “The Black Swordsman” featured in this same short is not Irish.
- The Mayor of Dublin : That’s right folks,
Mobile Suit GundamZeta Gundam featured the mayor of Dublin (thanks to Hecate for the correction). - Legarch : Black Lagoon, I vaguely remember this guy, he was very drunk and/or stoned all the time while driving a jeep with the Thai chick. I can’t find a picture right now.
- Engineer - Space Battleship Yamato (thanks to Hybridchild for this piece of information).
As my knowledge of anime is not quite encyclopedic (like, say, wikipedia), I’ve probably left out a few more from shows that I have never seen. If I’ve missed some, please inform me and I will add them to the list.

Priest Anderson from Hellsing is Irish too =.=
And Ultimate Muscle was on Toonami… and horrible…
>Priest Anderson from Hellsing is Irish too =.=
Probably not. His nationality is unknown, and his surname is Scottish; so even without the accent assigned him in the English adaptations, he is unlikely to be Irish. Either way, it’s not stated
Actually I think the mayor of Dublin appeared in Zeta Gundam. The white base did visit Belfast in the original mobile suit Gundam though, where there were several Irish characters introduced. One was called “Miharu” though, not sure how Irish that name is..
Yeah Miharu was from Belfast. Andersen is Scottish according to Hirano. Also the enginner Space Battleship Yamato was Irish, can rememeber his name though but he was basically Scotty but Irish
Dublin was in Double Zeta Gundam, not Zeta…

Well he gets awfully active when he found that Hellsing were taking a job in Ireland, and he didn’t care if it was Northern Ireland.
That’s becasue ireland has catholics in it. Given the guy who created the characters says he scotish its safe to assume he is scotish
Don’t forget the chick from Fafner in the Azure and the stoned driver from Black Lagoon
woops. damn vision and booze
Ichigo from Bleach too, in the first starting of the japanese version you can clearly see him wearing an Irish Flag colored sweatband on his wrist.

I was explaining why I thought he was Irish =| Don’t get critical on me =.= (Man I took forever to get back to this…)
Cool article, CuLT!
Dublin was in Gundam? O: AWESOME! I need to watch me some Gundam now!
Jin from Yu Yu hakusho ’s Irish, too.
